In a series of posts to Facebook on Sunday and Monday, the company accused Rio Tinto's Rio Ambiente International Inc. of using fraudulent representations and accounting practices that violate its corporate laws.
Rio's alleged racketeering conspiracy was uncovered last month when the U.S. Attorney's Office announced the indictment of five executives linked to the scheme, including Rio's former head of investment banking and treasurer.
The Rio Ambiente case and others related to Brazil's mining sector span more than 60 years of history, according to the company, which is not an employee of the Brazilian government.
"The Rio Ambiente investigation sheds new light on a long and ongoing pattern of deception involving Rio's R&D and operations," Eric Schmerber, Rio's general counsel and executive vice president, wrote in a post.
The Justice Department has said it plans to go beyond Rio's financial misconduct trial to "delve into the real underbelly of Brazil's mining sector."
Rio is among a few world powers looking to expand its role as one of the world's largest mining companies, including South Africa's Norges Bank and China's Gansu Group, as both of them grapple with high prices for its iron and coal resources.
Citing Rio's $200 million investment in a new research facility that will be one of its biggest in 40 years, Rio last month expanded its contract with the University of Montana to include research on its mining technology, adding research and development to its activities.
A spokeswoman for Rio said in an email that while the U.S. and Brazil had reached an agreement "to accelerate work" to "add new and emerging technologies to our efforts in this area," she said "there is no timeline to complete this work in the near future."
Her spokesman confirmed that Rio had already signed a memorandum of understanding with Montana University for the creation of a facility for mining equipment and research.
Rio, the world's second-largest iron and coal producer, is under U.S. pressure to boost its role as a leading supplier of natural gas. Brazil currently supplies nearly half of the world's natural gas, which is widely used worldwide in transportation and heat.
Rio has said it is not pursuing legal action against Norges Bank in U.S. federal court, while it has previously accused the bank of fraudulently misallocating large sums of money from two foreign bank accounts in the U.S.
