Turnbull flags liberal national merger after'surgical error'

TONY JONES: The Federal Government has flagged a possible deal with the Liberal Party to form a minority government after just one term. But as the prime minister warned on Monday afternoon, there is no reason to think there will be any deal.

CHRIS UHLMANN: Well, the thing with a coalition is that there will be some things you cannot do. The thing that is - there is no reason to suppose that the party that has been at the centre - as well as Labor, and there is no reason to suppose that the ALP, would suddenly switch course to back us down the line.

TONY JONES: Tony Abbott?

TONY ABBOTT: Well, it is not the policy - it's not the policy - it's not the principle that this Coalition government believes in that it wants to negotiate any sort of partnership with the Nationals. I agree with that.

TONY JONES: Chris Uhlmann?

CHRIS UHLMANN: In particular, there are no reasons to believe that any policy that it comes with would give the Nationals any sort of support to get their policies through parliament. So - but there is - there is no reason to think that we would go up to the federal level and announce that the Labor Party is backing down on the NBN in the same way the Palmer United Party's backing down on...

TONY JONES: Right. I'm sorry to interrupt.

CHRIS UHLMANN:...Queensland's support for the carbon tax is not a policy that they're taking with them into state and federal parliament.

TONY ABBOTT: Well, Chris, I want to come back to this. Tony was correct. So our policy is to repeal Labor's policies. But the - we will not back down from one policy once it has become a law. So, again, this is an issue that has been a matter of discussion between the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition and I think that the fact that - the Leader of the Opposition has not made that commitment, if anything, is a sign that there is confusion about whether the Prime Minister is trying to get some sort of deal with one party or the other.

CHRIS UHLMANN: The - well, this is good because if you're going to be a government and you're not going to have any sort of a deal, then you're sort of doing things in one direction only. You can't get into a deal where you're not going to be in a government.

TONY ABBOTT: Well, no. No, it's a really important point that - Tony.

Antony green projects labor to win queensland court

Annette Brown's lawyers are hoping to gain her release from jail as soon as possible after spending eight days in isolation as they try to win their bid to get her into the Queenston jail facility.

Brown was arrested on a charge of resisting arrest on Thursday evening and was taken to Queenston police headquarters where she had been held as a result of the protests over her removal from court.

Her lawyer, Barry Beavers, told ABC local that his client had made her way from one area of the courthouse to another and said that after a half-hour-long sit-down at police headquarters, she was now back with her husband, Scott Brown.

"Annette Brown has been released from the Queenston Police Station. She has been reunited with the Brown family," Beavers told reporters at a media briefing at the county detention centre, where she remained in a medically induced coma, for up to four days.

"On Friday evening, she spent eight hours in an open jail cell."

Brown has been held since May 24 for refusing to give up her seat on the Queenston bench. Her release was delayed several times during the trial due to the nature of her arrest and the fact that her husband was not charged.

Beavers said that a police search warrant was issued on Tuesday morning, requesting information about Brown's whereabouts after she was detained at the Queenston police station in the early hours of Friday.

When officers arrived they discovered she had been detained for "several hours" but they had not yet located her husband. Beavers said that after the search he discovered Brown's passport, phones and wallet and was able to establish she was in fact in the Queenston jail.

"I am a man of good character and I'm looking forward to being released," Brown told reporters before she was released from the Queenston jail.

He said she had told him "all her friends and co-workers" were in court.
